Mineirao Stadium, Belo Horizonte

Belo Horizonte is the only major city in the country whose top clubs do not have a stadium medium size. Opened in 1965, the Governor Magalhaes Pinto Stadium, better known as Mineirão is owned by the state government, and has capacity for 81 000 people. His attendance record was in 1997 when 132,800 spectators followed the game in the Vila Nova Cruzeiro won by 1-0. In retirement, he can meet theFIFA and the sporting potential of the city, characterized by the existence of a paying audience able to give economic support to the stadium. Citing as an example only, of the 57,000 tickets available for the game between Brazil and Argentina in June 2008, 52 500 were sold, with total income of $ 6.6 million, which means an average value per ticket R $ 125.75.

Belo Horizonte has a history of large public and income in the Mineirão. But there are several interventions to adapt to the demands of FIFA Mineirão, mostly related to problems of visibility and safety. A strengthening of pillars and spring was implemented to sustain the upper bleachers, but spoils the view from the bleachers to the field below. There are also scores on the bleachers and railings on the separation of the fans, which compromises visibility in various parts of the stadium.

Mane Garrincha Stadium, Brasilia

The stage chosen by City to host football’s World Cup is the Mane Garrincha, built in 1974. The space includes asports complex with changing rooms, physiotherapy room, accommodation, restaurant and gym. Today can accommodate 45 000 people, but a reform already programmed will increase its capacity to 70,000 seats. In addition to changes in pitch and the stands, the stadium will get a cover and a section for shops and commercialenterprises. To access ramps will be constructed twelve o’clock. It is expected that work be started in 2009. Infrastructure for tourism Brasilia has two sectors of hotels and flats, which all add up to 50 facilities with a total of 28 000 beds. The accommodation further away from the Mane Garrincha stadium, is located only 2 km, a distance that can be navigated on foot. There are new projects running to the hotel network in the city, and the forecast is that supply will increase by at least 20% by 2014.

Vivaldao Stadium, Manaus

In Manaus, the soccer matches are conducted mainly in Vivaldão the “Vivaldão” with 43 000 seats, and the Stadium of San Ramon, with a maximum capacity of 16,000 seats. For the 2014 World Cup, the project is the demolition of Vivaldão, and the building in its place a new stadium or multipurpose arena. The capacity will be close to 48 000 seats and will have 11,000 parking spaces at the stadium and surrounding area. The stadium should be completed this until the first half of 2013 to attend the matches of the Confederations Cup, which will occur early in the second half.

More photos enlarge Like football in the Amazon is in its infancy, and its audience is still small, the return on investment probably will not come from ticket revenue. The expectation is that the work would pay for increased tourism in the region, which is the major objective of Manaus to the World Cup. Thus, private enterprise should not be the major investor of the works, and the more likely it is that the state government to allocate their own resources to enable the equipment.

Verdao Stadium, Cuaiba

Cuiabá is developing the project of renewing the Estádio José Fragelli the Verdão, originally built in 1999. It is expected that the work be completed by December 2012 for the completion of the Confederations Cup, and count on investments of $ 350 million. With the reform, the new arena will have capacity for 48,000 fans, and an area with cabins, tribune of honor and press offices.
The state plan for the World Cup in 2014 calls for the establishment of four training centers that would receive the selections scheduled for play in Cuiaba. The centers would be installed in the cities of Chapada dos Guimarães, Baron Melgaço, Lake of the Great Maze and Lowland.
A negative factor in the Cuiaba project is the fragility of the local sports scene, with sets of small public, making it difficult to support the new stadium after the World Cup. The economic viability of the project could be strengthened if the Verdão becomes a multipurpose arena, which can also host concerts and other events of general public. To do this you need to include the route from Cuiaba great international music concerts. The risk is the new stadium the same fate Gym Aecim Tocantins, an investment of $ 26 million it receives few events and was almost closed to sports activities in thecommunity.

Arena da Baixada

Arena da Baixada is the stadium in the city of Curitiba (see other host cities) which will host matches of the World Cup2014.

There are two major teams in Curitiba: Atlético Paranaense, to which Arena da Baixada belongs, and Coritiba, which is owner of another stadium called Couto Pereira.
Above, a photo of Arena da Baixada in January 2010. The image shows that a good part of the stadium is yet to be completed.
From the beginning, it was known that, if Curitiba was chosen as host city, then Arena da Baixada would be chosen as the stadium, for it is clearly much more modern and in much better shape than Couto Pereira; in Porto Alegre, only other city with a similar situation, the dispute was much fiercer.
“Baixada” means “low lands”. This is because Atlético Paranaense is located in a relatively lower altitude, compared to the central area of Curitiba (where Coritiba is located).
The official name of the stadium is Estádio Joaquim Américo Guimarães. Mr. Guimarães was President of Internacional-PR, an old club which merged with América-PR, thus forming Atlético Paranaense; Mr. Guimarães started the stadium’s construction in 1912, and the inaugural match took place in 1914.
In 1997, the old stadium was demolished. In 1999, the new stadium, now renamed to Arena da Baixada, was opened (which explains why this is one of the most modern stadia in Brazil). In 2001, Atlético Paranaense was champion of the Brazilian League, and the stadium experienced its record attendance: 31,740 people.
From 2005 to 2008, the Japanese company Kyocera became a sponsor of Atlético, and the name of the stadium was changed to Arena Kyocera.
Below, some artistic image of the new Arena da Baixada.

The lateral side which today is incomplete will be finished, bringing the stadium closer to an Arena. Capacity will be increased from current 25,400 seats to 41,375 seats. Two parking loots will be built, one inside the stadium fitting 1,908 vehicles and one outside the stadium fitting 7,500 vehicles. The restaurants and commercial sectors will be expanded.
Arena da Baixada is one of the three private stadiums to host matches of the Cup 2014 (the other ones are Beira-Rio and Morumbi). Because the stadium is private, the Governments (Federal, State and city) are less willing to inject public money to carry out the necessary works; this report of March 5th informs that, according to the managers of Atletico, works in the stadium will start in 2011 or, at the earliest, after the World Cup 2010 is finished.

Arena Das Dunas, Natal

The stadium will have capacity of 45,000 people. Estimated cost of the Arena alone: between R$ 300 and R$ 400 million. Below, an artistic night view of Arena das Dunas.

The current Natal stadium, called Machadão (State owned), will be demolished and the new arena will take its place.

The project comprehends also the building of new Administrative Centers for the city of Natal and the State of Rio Grande do Norte (currently, there are already several State administrative buildings in the area, which will also be demolished), a shopping center, a hotel, and several residential and commercial buildings. Below, a view of the complex.

Natal is one of the most environment conscious cities in Brazil. The entire project will follow environment friendly guidelines. The lagoon shown in the image below is a reconstruction of an old lagoon which used to exist in that neighbourhood (which, by the way, is called Lagoa Nova, or New Lagoon).

Dunes and lagoons are closely associated formations: the dunes filter the rain water, which migrate downwards until finding a more solid layer deeper in the soil; if there are a large number of dunes in a small area (as it happens in Natal), water will accumulate in the space between them, hence forming lagoons.

Bahia Arena, Fonte Nova Stadium salvador

The Salvador Arena is the name of the stadium that is due to replace the Fonte Nova Stadium, in coming years, as the largest footballing stage in the State of Bahia. Apart from the 2014 World Cup, the stadium is also being considered for use in theOlympic Games of 2016, as Salvador was mentioned by the Brazilian Olympic Committee as one of the five State Capitals that would be hosting games of the Olympic football tournament.

To take part in the most prestigious sporting events in the world, the Brazilian Government has decided on the total demolition of the Octávio Mangabeira Stadium, situated on the banks of the Tororó Dyke. In its place, there shall be the construction of a modern arena, meeting the standards set by the International Football Federation (FIFA), conceived by the São Paulo firm Setepla Tecnometal together with German firm Schülitz + Partner.

This demolition, however, shall not entirely wipe out the history of the Fonte Nova Stadium. The Government wants to erect a memorial in honourhonor of the victims of the accident in 2007, which killed seven supporters after part of the stands collapsed. In addition, the new arena shall keep the oval geometry and the wide South opening, conceived by modernist architect Diógenes Rebouças in the 1940s. “We could just get a standard project, in the shape of a television, and put it there.
